Avery New World Porter & Alaskan Smoked PorterSomeone once said, "If beer and women aren't the answer, then you're asking the wrong questions."

Stone Brewery is proving, yet again, that they are in the forefront of the craft beer industry.  The third installment of their ‘Women Only’ beer classes - held at the brewery – featured eight stouts and porters and about 40 beer loving women of all ages.

Every year breweries around the world compete in a sundry of beer festivals and competitions. Rounds of tasting win loyal customers and make every competition that much more challenging to pick the best beer.  The Brewers Association announced that the U.S. has 1525 breweries and brewpubs, July 31, 2009.  Thankfully, that’s a lot of beer.

Lambic, barley wineThe image of a fresh, ice cold, frosted glass full of light beer has been imprinted into our mindset with just as much force as, well, millions of dollars of beer advertisers can shove down our collective throats.  The very concept of deliberately aging a beer contradicts everything we see and hear in most beer advertisements.  Such fizzy, yellowish lagers will indeed suffer with a few months of age.  The most common, mass-market beers such as Budweiser, Heineken, Stella Artois and Corona, are designed to be drunk as soon as they leave the brewery.

Stout bar in Los Angeles

Stout’s owners have positioned their burger bar right in the middle of the newly revived Cahuenga corridor with bars like Burgundy Room, Beauty Bar and Velvet Margarita. Located in the same strip mall as Soi 56 and Big Wangs, the parking lot charges $7.00. Also, beware that the street meters aren’t free after 6pm like most of Los Angeles.  Stout is open until 4am, perhaps calculated to cash in on ravenous bar-goers simply not soused enough to drive home.

One of the first nouveau-Belgian breweries in America has adventurously brewed the first Lambic-style beer traditionally brewed with the use of spontaneous fermentation in a koelschip in the U.S. The beer without a name, but already a reputation, is appropriately called Allagash Spontaneous.
